Focus on light and shadow.
This image is very cool with the use of light. The purpose of light is very clear in this image, there is the difference between the dark and light side, but not clear. So I contrast the light and dark, focus on the place where I like the light is. The light reflects from water surface to the shoulder of the fish, the head of the small one lies on that shoulder. And this is the space that I want to focus on. I also change the color of the head, make it look like moss. I just create a little abstract to represent the love of these two fishes.

it seems that you like to edit the light more than the other effects and you know about the lights clearly. However, the picture is so sad by the dark.^^...
I think your work is a little bit not exciting. It is not so different with the original picture. Why don't you try to add more light to the back of the big fish, and make the other areas darker. It's may be more fun!!!
Arghhh... They're not FISH, they're mammals!
Anyway... I actually like the work quite a bit. Your manipulation of the light has really turned them into stones in a river... and the little one seems to be growing some kind of weed ;-)
Don't pay too much attention to the criticism of it not being "exciting", you clearly know what you are focussing on ... and that is what is important.
